Jorgean culture is not only scenery: it is the set of crafts that let people live on a long, narrow island open to the Atlantic.

Sea

Artisanal fishing, the harbours of Velas and Calheta, and the memory of whalers and tuna factories shaped generations. The sea remains livelihood, leisure and risk.

Land

Cheese-making, fajã vineyards, honey, horticulture and livestock demand fine knowledge of microclimates and volcanic soils. DOP cheese, wine and honey are the public face of that work.

Paths and building

Stone walls, tracks between pastures, and the official trails visitors walk today were for centuries work routes — carrying milk, descending to a fajã, going to mass or the harbour.
