São Jorge’s slopes and pastures — hydrangea, clover, pittosporum and other Atlantic flora — feed bees that produce a clear to golden aromatic honey prized on the island and in the diaspora.

Island beekeeping

Production is typically artisanal: hives at various altitudes, seasonal harvests, and honey that reflects the farming year and the wind. Flavour shifts with bloom — more floral in spring, denser later in the season.

At the table

Serve with cheese, bread or by the spoon. Together with DOP cheese and wine, honey completes the edible landscape of São Jorge. See also cattle & pastures.
