On São Jorge, the year is still marked by masses, processions and street feasts. Each parish has its patron saint; pilgrimages to chapels on the fajãs — especially on the north and south coasts — bring families down on foot or by jeep, with food, music and devotion.
Feast and community
A feast is not only religious: it is when emigrants return, summer houses reopen, festival committees raise funds, and a brass band or folk group fills the square. In Velas and Calheta, larger celebrations mix procession, street party and, at times, tourada à corda.
Pilgrimages to the fajãs
The fajãs of Caldeira de Santo Cristo, Cubres, São João and Penedia have their own chapels and customs. The descent is part of the rite: the narrow path, the Atlantic view, and mass outdoors or in the chapel bind faith, landscape and family memory.
