Dr. Álvaro de Carvalho Velar (1885–1973) was a central figure in São Jorge's intellectual and educational life in the 20th century. A teacher, writer, journalist and advocate of Azorean culture, he dedicated his life to education and promoting the island's heritage.
Teaching and the press
As a teacher and school director on São Jorge, Álvaro Velar fought for accessible education on an isolated island. He founded and edited local publications, wrote essays on customs, history and landscape, and took part in the archipelago's cultural debates.
Monument in Velas
A monument in Velas main square honours his pioneering work — visible in this site's photo gallery. The square, which also holds the Heroes of the Azores memorial, is a centre of the town's civic memory.
Legacy
His work continues to inspire generations of islanders and connects São Jorge to Azorean literary and educational traditions — alongside other figures such as composer Francisco de Lacerda of Calheta.
