I came across the name Antone Machado Amarel Our ancestor was Manuel Antoni however he named his first three children surnames Da Moad. My parents are from there, my mom is from Faja Grande and i have no clue where my dad is from??? But, last year i made alot of new friends, the people there are just so much nicer than down here in America, but the one thing that americans do better than the portuguese people over there is that they don't drive wicked crazy.. in Sao Jorge I would go with my parents somewhere and there would be someone passing us... It's like why are you gonna be in a rush??.. But, i loved the festas like I already told you and everything else!!! I just wish that they had better doctors there!!!! Not, alot of people would die... My cousin is moving to Sao Jorge and he can't wait to get there... Maybe in 2 years i'll be moving there too.. But, my parents don't want me to go because that isn't my country or as i should say my island and that the only people that should go back are them.. And I told them that I wasn't stopping them!!! My maternal line is Bettencourt. My mother (living) is Dolores (baptized Lourdes)Silveira Bettencourt Silva. Silveira being her mother's maiden name. Her parents came from Sao Jorge in the early 1900's and originally lived in Rhode Island before moving to the upper San Joaquin Valley of CA. Their names were John S. Bettencourt and Maria Silveira Bettencourt. The 'S' in John's name also stands for Silveira, I think! Amherst, MA USA - Wednesday, September 05, 2001 at 11:29:50 (EDT) Hello, my name is Christina Teixeira. i love this web-site!! it's so awesome. i just got back from sao jorge two weeks ago, and i had a wonderful time there. my parents are from beira and toledo and i was born in beira, but my parents and i left when i was 18 months old. and we've lived in california ever since then. we haven't been back there since we left, well until this past july. we went for five weeks and i had the best time ever!!! there is so much to do in sao jorge and it is so beautiful. we went everywhere, velas, calheta, urzelina, faja dos cubres, topo, norte grande, norte pequeno.....there and so many more places that we spent time at. i encourage everyone to go to sao jorge. i'll be 19 next month and i am so glad that i got the oppurtunity to go back to my birth place. i can't wait to go back next summer!!!

My ancestry comes from Rosais; I met members of my family (Goncalves side) who hosted me for a few days and showed me around the island. It's a place like no other! I am currently living in San Jose. This site is wonderful and so is SÃ£o Jorge! My father has a house in fajÃ£ d'AlÃ©m which is next to fajÃ£ do Ouvidor. I have spent great times in that paradise! Even when I lived there, I was always fascinated with the incredible and poetic landscapes of my island. My great grandfather was Jose Texeira born 1844 from Santo Amaro and married Lucinda (last name unknown) from Graciosa born 1858 - came to U.S. around 1862 by way of Isthmus of Panama - one of his sons was Frank Tash born 1895 who married Mary Amarel my grandmother - my father's name is Albert Francis Tash. Then I have my great grandfather on Mary Amarel Tash's side- his name was Antone Machado Amarel from Ribeira Seca born Sept 8, 1844 and married Louise Andrade from Flamengos, Faial born in 1844. Antone Machado Amarel came to U.S. around 1862 and Louise Andrade came over around 1866. I am very interested to find out more information to help figure it all out. I grew up in the Pocket Road area but also lived with my Great Aunt and Uncle for ahwile - they were Tony Amarel (son of Antone) and Mary Amarel (I don't know her ancestry a lot... just that she was a cousin to Tony - they never had children). San Jose, CA USA - Friday, April 21, 2000 at 02:24:17 (EDT) I have visited the Azores in 1956 as a West Point Cadet on my way back from French Morocco, and again in 1967 on my way back from Saigon via an Embassy flight. Both times I was impressed but, unfortunately, visited only a few short hours. I want to return in the next week or two, but I want to stay in either a guesthouse or Bed and Breakfast, tour via moped or small motor bike. I have not been able to get any information on either yet, I guess because tour operators seem more interested in making the most money, not in satisfying my special, perhaps odd, needs. Can anyone help? I find that PEOPLE are the key to enjoying the locale, rather than just "doing the place." Your site is the closest thing I've seen that may be a good bet: one does not find Acorean people very often!
